Unusual February rain: Kota Bharu sees wettest February on record beating previous record by almost 3 times
Northeastern parts of Peninsula Malaysia and parts of South Thailand has seen some unusual rains for February leading to some flooding. Such rain is more typical of the wet season whereas February is typically part of the dry season.
Kg. Embong in Terengganu saw 514 mm on rain on the 27th and more than 1000 mm of rain within 4 days.
Kota Bharu in Kelantan saw the wettest February on record where mm of rain fell, around 3 times the previous record of mm set in with records dating back to 1930.
Kuala Terengganu also saw the wettest February on record with mm of rain beating the previous record of 647 mm in February 1947.
Several parts of South Thailand also saw their wettest February on record.
The intense rains were due to moist low level wind convergence of a monsoon surge with a tropical low.
