More rain in an hour than during March 2010 hailstorm
July 9 2021:
Heavy rain has wrecked havoc across Perth this afternoon with even a report of a motorist having to be rescued following
Kings Park saw some 46.2 mm of rain within an hour to 3 PM today. This is comparable to the hourly rainfall associated with the March 2010 hailstorm where the Mt Lawley site saw 38.4 mm within an hour, the Kings Park station was not yet around in 2010.
Radar estimates that hourly rainfall to 3 PM exceeded 50 mm in isolated places.
Such hourly rainfall totals at any point is extremely rare in Perth, intensity-frequency-duration (IFD) analysis done by consultant hydrologist Jim Davies and George Gaylard in 2014 found that a once in a 100 year (statistically) hourly rainfall total in Perth is around 47.5 mm.
Kings Park has already seen the wettest whole month in more than 2 years in just the first 9 days of this July.
