-15°C in South Africa, not on a mountain
Ground temperatures down to as low as -15°C have been detected by infrared satellite on Thursday morning over areas of South Africa that is not on a mountain. Mountains to the east however, provide opportunity for cold air drainage.
For Wednesday morning , infrared satellite detected ground temperatures as low as -18°C on a mountain peak in South Africa.
It is however a relatively isolated part of South Africa and so there are no official stations to confirm the temperature readings, however comparisons between surface observations and the infrared satellite observations over where there are official temperature readings show that the satellite observations are quite accurate.
