Coldest city in the world experiences coldest month in 27 years
The coldest city in the world, Yakutsk in Siberia has experienced its coldest month, that is for any month of the year in some 27 years, that is since January 1994 by mean temperature.
The mean temperature was some -44.6°C in January which was around 7°C below the 1990-2020 normal.
Yakutsk is in the midst of an unusually long frigid spell with temperatures having remained below -30°C since December 8.
What makes this frigid spell particularly fascinating is how it is occurring despite the record heat last summer when it reached 38.0°C at Verkhoyansk. 2020 was Yakutsk's warmest year on record and January 2020 was Yakutsk warmest January on record.
