Top End coastal 4°C: Tropical Australia cold spell
Halfway through the month, large parts of tropical Australia are still under the grip of the cold spell which started late last month.
For example, infrared satellite data shows surface temperatures having dipped to as low as 4°C even near the coast over the Top End overnight.
Even at the official BOM Tiwi Island station of Point Fawcett, temperatures dipped to 11.0°C.Temperatures dipped to 6.7°C at the rural Darwin station of Middle Point.

Note: Satellite derived surface or "skin" temperatures could be a few degrees colder than what would be measured by standard meteorological equipment at the respective locations (Stevenson-Screen thermometers at around 2 meters above the ground) due to the radiation temperature inversion.
