China hit by unusual October heatwave
October 5 2021:
Parts of China have been hit by an unusual record breaking October heatwave which continues after an unusually hot September.
Temperatures within the region could have reached 40°C with ECMWF model simulation of 39°C near Hengyang today with the raw ECMWF simulation typically having a cool bias, that is the maximum temperature tends to be higher.
Unfortunately, there is no weather station near Hengyang, however, temperatures at Changsha some 200 km away reached a maximum of 36.8°C compared to the ECMWF predicted maximum of around 36°C.
This beats the October record high prior to this year of 35.1°C by a large margin where today actually marks the 4th consecutive day where the previous October record high was broken with 4 consecutive days so far with a maximum temperature of at least 36.0°C. The average mean maximum temperature in Changsha in October is 23°C.
The average mean maximum temperature in September at Changsha is 28.3°C (1981-2010 mean), however the mean maximum temperature in September 2021 was 35.5°C. This makes September 2021 the hottest month of 2021 by mean maximum temperature at the station whereas on average July is the hottest month with an average mean maximum temperature of 33.5°C. This also makes the September 2021 mean maximum temperature almost 5 standard deviations above the 1981-2010 average for September.
Data from the station dates back to 1910.
Temperatures at Ji'an and Lingling reached a maximum of 37.4°C today.
Even at Zaoyang, some 32 Degrees North of the equator, maximum temperatures reached 37.0°C yesterday.
This beats the previous record high for October prior to this year of 33.0°C by a considerable margin.
Temperatures at the infamous Wuhan also beat the October record high for 2 consecutive days with a maximum temperature of 36.0°C on Monday and 35.8°C on Sunday beating the record of 34.4°C by a margin.
